Scandi style and minimalist with My Scandinavian Home

We love the classy interior design found in Scandinavian homes. There’s something distinct and minimal about the style that keeps us wanting to see more. We go to My Scandinavian Home for inspiration on the regular. If you haven’t been on this blog, you’re missing out. Blogger Niki always shows off the best Scandinavian interiors she comes across. We were crazy excited to get the chance to chat with her where we found that answer to that question that everyone always wonders. Why do most Scandinavian-styled interiors tend to be white?

TELL US WHAT MAKES A SCANDINAVIAN HOME UNIQUE

Scandinavian homes are unique in that they often have a minimalist look and feel with clean lines and a neutral colour palette. Since light in the winter is a scarce resource Scandinavians strive to create as much light in the home as possible. For this reason, the walls and ceilings are often kept white and the floors a light colored wood. This is done in order to bounce the light around as much as possible.

Candles are also a popular feature, especially in the darker months. The other amazing thing about Scandinavian homes is the organizational aspect. A minimalist style home can only be achieved with incredible organization. From what I’ve seen, people work under the rule of ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. Just don’t open that cupboard they choose not to show you!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE HOME THAT YOU’VE COME ACROSS?

Probably this home which is located here in Skåne. Isn’t it amazing? I love the mix of vintage and contemporary. It was for sale last year and I was so tempted, if only it came with all of the furniture too!

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO TAKE THE INTERIOR DESIGN OF THEIR HOME IN A MORE MINIMALISTIC DIRECTION?

I think storage and organization is the key (I’m still working on this myself!). Today’s home tour is a great example of how the owners have managed to keep the look clean and relatively minimalistic despite owning quite a lot of possessions. Take a look here.

Style blogger Anabela Piersol shares all her favorite things

We reeealllly want you to like us. So in true schoolyard form, we’re giving out bribes to get you be our friend.

In the mean time, we’re lucky that the preexisting friends we do have are pretty amazing. For example, Anabela Piersol who runs Fieldguided. (Don’t act like you don’t know). If you read her blog, you’ll want her to become your best friend. She’s that cool. She’s a photographer, has great taste, and she makes things!

We got her to design wallpaper for your iPads and iPhones. And here comes the bribe – we’re giving it to you for FREE! [Just click to download at the bottom of this post]

Since we already had her attention (designing the wallpaper for us and all), we thought we could squeeze a little bit more out of her by asking her a quick Q&A.

WE LOVE YOUR BLOG, PHOTOS, AND MERCHANDISE. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A BLOGGER, PHOTOGRAPHER, OR DESIGNER?

Hmm, it’s hard for me to claim any of those since I really only dabble in each. I suppose “blogger,” since it’s the one I can do with the most ease.

DO YOU PREFER DOING ONE OVER THE OTHER?

I actually really love taking photographs when I get into a good groove with it. It’s something I wish I knew a lot more about!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE…

Sandwich: My favourite sandwich in the world is an Italian eggplant sandwich I get at a place called California Sandwiches: breaded, fried slices of eggplant covered in hot peppers and tomato sauce, with mozzarella cheese. I like to get mushrooms and rapini on it, too. Served in a crispy bun, yum.

Magazine: I think at the moment it’s The Gentlewoman, but I also love Wilder Quarterly.

Movie: Mystic Pizza!

Photographer: Maryanne Casasanta is amazing.

Book: Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates.

Designer: Phoebe Philo.

Color: Pink, many different shades of it.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE TORONTO PLACES TO:

Eat Dinner: La Cubana.

Shop: Really into plants these days so I would say the plant shop Dynasty.

People Watch: The Toronto Islands.

Grab a Coffee: Sam James Coffee Bar.

Eat a Croissant: I don’t know where they get their croissants but the coffee shop The Common has the best ones.

Hang out with Friends: My backyard in summer.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE GRAPHIC YOU DID FOR US? WHY THE QUOTE?

Flowers are my favourite things to photograph, especially when you get in really close and they look abstract. The quote is from the Kate Bush song “Cloudbusting,” and it’s always been really inspiring to me. As a Kate Bush enthusiast, I think of it all the time! It’s very positive. Positive vibes for spring 2014.
