9 trends from NYFW Fall 2016 you can wear now

With all the up to the minute coverage of New York Fashion Week, it’s really hard not to lust after that pink velvet suit from Creatures of Comfort or Rodebjer’s sumptuous pajamas for day. Especially when the weather outside is way more fall/winter than spring/summer. It’s exactly why we’re seeing designers mixing up the traditional fashion calendar and offering looks straight off the runway. Times they are a changing. We recommend a resourceful approach: distill a few trends from NYFW that are easy to pull off right now and keep your fashion forward. And even get them, dare we say it, on sale.

BUTTONED UP: Modest is more for Fall 2016, with designers like Eckhaus Latta and Sachin & Babi showing collections with the spirit of Lady Mary Crawley from Downton Abbey: conservative but with an edge.

WEAR IT NOW: Easy shirt dresses that you can throw on and look perfectly polished.

THE RETURN OF PUNK: From the flourescent hues and goth-girl hair at Public School’s show to the razor sharp cut outs and exposed zippers shown at Assembly, this look is about embracing those details that have always been a bit bad ass.

WEAR IT NOW: Add a statement piece with a smattering of studs, slick leather, oversized grommets or pops of neon.

A PERFECT MATCH: Whether it was stripes, polka dots or even sweet hearts, as seen at Creatures of Comfort, one thing designers had in common was their love for printed matching sets. This look has been gaining traction over the past year with the knit sets and tone on tone dressing comeback.

WEAR IT NOW: Embrace matchy matchy and coordinate your prints on the top and bottom for an #ootd that makes a statement without much effort.

TROUSER POWER: Maybe it stems from the ’70s revival or Hillary Clinton’s Sisterhood of the Travelling Pantsuit? From cropped, wide leg pants to silky, draped trousers, it’s all about who wears the pants for Fall 2016.

WEAR IT NOW: Tuck in a slouchy Oxford button up for an androgynous feel or pair with mules and a slinky blouse.

VA VA VELVET: Shout out to the amazing lush velvet everything at 3.1 Phillip Lim. It’s the kind of win-win fabric we love: soft, cozy to wear and looks luxe.

WEAR IT NOW: Try velvet in unexpected ways. We love velvet in a punchy hue or velvet flares with a cotton tee.

LUXE ATHLEISURE: Rag & Bone’s bomber jackets and elevated track pants? Game. On. It’s the trend that just won’t quit, so feeling sporty? Go with it.

WEAR IT NOW: Add athletic pieces like bomber jackets, tennis dresses and joggers to your closet and wear with everything that’s not sporty. Or try technical fabrics like perforated leather, mesh or jersey.

PLAID IS RAD: Throwing a nod to ’90s grunge and traditional Scottish tartan, the collections of designers like Suno and 3.1 Phillip Lim showed the classic fabric in a number of ways for Fall 2016. It’s kind of like the spring season’s floral print: always there, but always fresh.

WEAR IT NOW: Go grunge with a slouchy plaid skirt or traditional with an easy overcoat.

SHEER PANELS: Designers played peek-a-boo on the NYFW runways with strategically placed cut outs and sheer panels of fabric. It’s the perfect hint of skin without being overt.

WEAR IT NOW: Sheer panels on a midi skirt or dress are a nice lead into warmer days, without tights.

GOT A HANDLE ON IT: Retro, top-handle handbags were once again a bit hit on the runways.

WEAR IT NOW: Try with a day dress and heels for a ladylike look or with frayed jeans and a white t-shirt to give the prim bag a casual update.
