Woman We Love: Nikisha Brunson

We Love

We’re in love with Nikisha Brunson. Reasons why? Well, not only does she approach her public and private life with an inspiring amount of honesty and bravery (she’s been very open about her experiences with abuse, anxiety and depression), she is one of those women you discover on Instagram and instantly want to be friends. By day she is the co-founder of Urban Bush Babes and runs her own apothecary line Folie (100% natural and handcrafted in small batches). And of course, she also has a killer sense of style. Effortless basics and understated cool is her jam — you’ll find her keeping busy in casual silhouettes like jumpsuits and t-shirts, in muted hues like gray and navy. We first got to know her when she worked with some of our favorite fashion pals in Texas and, obviously, we were dying to learn more about this Austin-based beauty. We caught up with Nikisha to get her lowdown on style and the city.

Some alternate text

"Minimal, neutral colors, laidback, comfortable, chic. Think Calvin Klein in the '90s."

TELL US ALL ABOUT YOU. I was born in Toronto, Canada and moved to Brooklyn, New York at age 3. I was in Brooklyn for 27 years, then moved to Virginia for a year and then Austin, Texas. I have a 16 year old son that I had when I was 17 years old. I was a single mom for 11 years until I got married. I have a Masters degree in childhood education and use to teach in NYC and in Virginia. Now I own a all natural skincare and haircare line called “Folie”, where I handcraft everything in small batches. I am also a health and wellness influencer. My journey with anxiety, depression, and ADHD are what drives my passions.

HOW DID YOU FIND THE TRANSITION OF MOVING FROM BROOKLYN TO AUSTIN? It was an easy transition because I was ready for more laid back living after watching NYC lose its soul. I was ready to take a new direction with my life and Austin provided exactly what I needed to do that. I also moved to Virginia before coming to Austin and lived there for a year. After living there, almost anything was better.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING IN AUSTIN? I love how laid back it is and how sweet everyone is.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD? We live up North about 12 minutes from downtown right by this beautiful outdoor shopping area called the Domain. They just built a new strip of all locally owned shops and restaurant/bars. Now it’s my go to spot for eating when I’m working from home. They are trying to turn our area into another downtown. Our home is in quiet neighborhood with mostly families.

NOW FOR SOME INSIDER SCOOP ON THE CITY: BEST PLACE TO EAT? Lavaca Street Bar. They have the best fish tacos in life!

BEST PLACE TO DRINK? Whisler’s

body-img-2

BEST PLACE TO PEOPLE WATCH? South Congress. You can see a lot of visitors from other places and sometimes the guy that rides his horse up and down SOCO.

MUST-SEE VISITOR SPOT? Barton Springs.

YOU WEAR SOME OF OUR FAVORITE BRANDS ON THE REGULAR. HOW DID YOU FIRST DISCOVER A LOVE FOR SUPPORTING EMERGING DESIGNERS? When I started modeling for the shop Olive and for Miranda Bennett I fell in love with independent and emerging designers.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE? Minimal, neutral colors, laid back, comfortable, chic. Think Calvin Klein in the 90s.

WHAT’S YOUR GO-TO OUTFIT? A jumpsuit with a pair of Maryam Nassir Zadeh or Martiniano shoes.

TELL US SOMETHING NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU. I’m a comedian. I’m good at making people laugh.
