Photographer and DJ Leslie Kirchhoff shares her favorite things

We Love

DJ, photographer, all around cool girl, we’ve got a major crush on Leslie Kirchhoff. Whenever there’s a fashion event in New York City, you’re likely to find her behind the decks. She regularly DJs parties for Dolce & Gabbana, Vera Wang, RVCA, and a whole lot more. Her day job as a photographer often has her shooting people like Pharrell Williams, Solange, Joan Smalls and Coco Rocha. Plus, you can find her interviewed for her style tips by Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Style.com, Nylon, and more on a regular basis. We have a feeling this is just the beginning for beauty who was born and raised in Wisconsin. So we asked and she answered.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO PHOTOGRAPH? I’ve always really loved shooting people, but recently I’ve gotten really into shooting food and playing around with more object-based setups. It’s a nice change of pace and a completely different style of photography.

"I feel like there’s a belief that girls don’t have as much music knowledge or technical ability as male DJs do ... it’s fun to prove that theory wrong."

DJ AS A PROFESSION IS A SUPER MALE-DOMINATED WORLD. WHAT’S IT LIKE BEING A FEMALE VOICE IN NIGHTLIFE? It’s a bit strange because I feel like there’s a belief that girls don’t have as much music knowledge or technical ability as male DJs do, and sometimes people are surprised to hear me play obscure songs or transition in an interesting way. But in the end it’s fun to prove that theory wrong and bring a little something different to the table.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR STYLE AT GIGS VERSUS DURING THE DAY. During the day I usually stick to jeans and tees and very simple looks. I value my comfort a lot during the day, especially when I’m shooting. For DJ gigs though, I do love to rock bolder looks, and usually wear heels and a dress.

IS IT TOUGH GETTING UP TO SHOOT AFTER A LATE NIGHT EVENT? I try my best to not schedule gigs too close together, and luckily most of my DJ gigs recently have been earlier in the evening. At one point when I was spinning frequently at clubs, I learned how to function on barely any sleep, but now I get my beauty rest. 🙂

TOP FIVE TRACKS TO GET THE DANCE FLOOR MOVING? “We Are Your Friends” – Ride on Time, Justice; “Black Box” – Let’s Dance, David Bowie; “F For You (feat. Mary J Blige)” – Disclosure; and “Last Nite” – The Strokes.

Bonus: We were lucky enough to have Leslie produce the soundtrack to our #BOUTIQUELOVE party with In Support Of in New York last week. You can stream it now on Soundcloud or Spotify.
