Meet the Designer: VOZ

Choose Day

Based in Brooklyn and made in Chile, VOZ takes aim at changing fashion’s perspective.

The luxury artisanal ready-to-wear brand gets its life juice from the beauty of ancient cultures and ceremonial crafts. Founded by Jasmine Aarons in 2012, the brand is empowering artisans and providing them with education and sustainable, fair trade employment. Focused on day to day essentials, VOZ is way beyond basic with their signature modern and global prospective. They collaborate with artisans in communities in southern Chile and Peru to create each collection from start to finish. All of the artisans receive authorship credit and royalties for their design contributions. We love it when we can feel that good about what we wear. We caught up with Jasmine to talk about their philosophy and life in Chile.

"The greatest joy of VOZ is drinking matte with the weavers and brainstorming and adapting prototypes with them."

TELL US ABOUT THE PHILOSOPHY AT VOZ. VOZ means voice, in that we exist to celebrate give a voice to indigenous artisans through a collaborative design process, market access, fair trade wages, and aesthetic celebration of their cultural traditions.

HOW DID YOU FIND THE ARTISANS YOU WORK WITH? Within our communities, artisans refer their family members to VOZ and thus our group has an intimate culture. When looking towards new regions, oftentimes artisan groups reach out to us, and also we look for skilled NGO’s or cooperatives to collaborate with.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE KINDS OF THINGS YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE IN CHILE? After five years of living in Southern Chile, it became a second home. My friends and their families, the weavers and artisans, are family to me. The greatest joy of VOZ is drinking matte with the weavers and brainstorming and adapting prototypes with them. Workshops are where we share ideas and techniques, and just have fun. My local Chilean friends prevent me from working too hard though. They bring by bottles of wine to dive into long nights of political debate or modern flamenco jam sessions, in which I play the role of dancer.
